Tomb of Karlo Metikoš

- it was a great honour to create the tomb of Karlo Metikoš, the renowned Croatian composer and musician whose artistic legacy remains deeply embedded in the nation’s cultural heritage. The tomb is located at Mirogoj Cemetery, one of Croatia’s most prominent resting places, and was crafted with exceptional attention to aesthetics, symbolism, and stone craftsmanship. The tomb was designed by Dražen Jakšić, whose distinctive style masterfully combines modern design principles with timeless tradition. This memorial represents a contemporary interpretation of classical motifs, where the cross, as the central symbol, is reimagined through the interplay of two contrasting stones forming a harmonious and modern whole. The headstone consists of two stone surfaces: the black stone bears the names of the Metikoš family, while the red stone carries the name of Karlo Metikoš. What makes this design truly remarkable is the dialogue between the two — the black surface shapes the outline of the cross, while the red stone forms its negative. Their union creates a refined, modern cross motif, a dominant yet subtle line defining the overall composition. The contrast between black and red stone enhances the visual depth, while the precision of the joints and the purity of form demonstrate exceptional stonemasonry skill. The result is modern and elegant, yet dignified and serene. This project exemplifies how tomb design can transcend functionality and become an expression of art, where stone carving, symbolism, and the author’s vision unite into a lasting monument — a tribute to music, creativity, and life itself.
