Replica of the Stone Rose Window for St Margaret’s Church in Nerežišća

Our workshop recently completed the creation of a stone rose window for St Margaret’s Church in Nerežišća, on the island of Brač.
The entire production and installation were a donation from our Jakšić workshop to the Municipality of Nerežišća, our parish, and the faithful of the community.
Through this project, we wished to contribute to the preservation of Brač’s cultural and spiritual heritage and to express lasting gratitude to our local community.

The work is a replica of the original rose window, more than 700 years old, made entirely by hand from a single block of white Brač limestone.
The project required great precision and patience, as every line and proportion had to remain true to the original Gothic design.

The shaping process began with careful study and reconstruction of the damaged areas, guided by archival photographs and field measurements.
This was followed by hand carving of the main form, defining the outer frame and geometric rhythm of the openings.
The inner columns and semicircular arches were meticulously crafted to maintain the symmetry and light rhythm characteristic of Dalmatian rose windows.

At the centre lies a small cross symbol, representing light and the spiritual heart of the church.
The surfaces were hand-polished, and the final texture created using traditional tools that leave subtle traces of craftsmanship – details that give the stone its life and warmth.
Since the rose window was made from a single piece of stone, the structure is heavier but far more durable and stable.
This approach ensures authenticity, endurance, and timeless quality – values that define every project we undertake.

This work is part of our ongoing dedication to sacred buildings, where the tradition of stonemasonry merges with respect for faith and history.
Each carved stone element is a small act of preserving the island’s spiritual and artistic heritage.

The Church of St Margaret, located in the heart of Nerežišća, is a Gothic single-nave church with a rectangular apse and finely crafted interior details.
Above its entrance now shines the new stone rose window, crafted in our workshop – a faithful revival of the church’s original façade and its spiritual expression.

This donation to our municipality, parish, and faithful stands as a gesture of gratitude and connection with the community that continues to preserve its faith and heritage in stone.
