In our workshop, we are finalising an exceptionally demanding and artistically powerful project – the monumental sculpture “Angel”, created by academic sculptor Lovre Jakšić. This sculpture carved from white Brač stone, standing at an impressive 2.40 metres, is made from the stone variety Veselje, known for its refined texture and elegant light tone.
It is a large-scale sculpture designed for a public space or a representative setting, where it will become a striking and recognisable focal point. It is currently placed in front of our workshop so that visitors can observe the final stages of its creation and experience the strength of the material and the artistic process up close.
Lovre Jakšić, whose sculptural signature is widely recognised for combining modern expression with traditional stone craftsmanship, brings a remarkable interplay of contrasts in “Angel”. The piece combines smooth, refined surfaces with roughly chiselled areas, creating a visual dynamism that has become a trademark of his work. These two treatments of stone are in perfect balance – the polished parts emphasise movement, while the rough textures bring energy and the sense of an untamed natural force.
A particularly striking element is the single raised wing, which conveys a strong sense of motion and ascension. The lines of the body flow gracefully, giving the impression that the sculpture is emerging from the stone itself, released from its mass through the sculptor’s skill. The face of the Angel holds a distinct mystique – the eyes gently shadowed, the expression serene yet powerful, creating a moment between the real and the abstract.
This project is another important contribution to contemporary Croatian sculpture and a confirmation that Brač stone sculpture can be traditional, modern, and deeply symbolic at the same time. “Angel” is a modern monumental sculpture ready to be installed in a public space, where it will enrich its surroundings with its strength and elegance.
