Island of Brač, Croatia
Our Jakšić stone workshop has recently completed and installed another tomb on the island of Pag — a refined and contemporary gravestone created for the well-known Gligora family, internationally recognised producers of Pag cheese. We are proud to have contributed to a project that unites modern stone design with precise craftsmanship in white Brač stone.
The design was created by architect Ivan Šupraha, M.Arch., with whom we have collaborated on several successful projects. His approach is based on minimalist geometry: the tomb is conceived as a composition of clean stone surfaces divided into several monumental blocks. At the centre of the composition are two precise linear cuts in the stone, breaking the massiveness of the form and creating a striking visual dynamic.
This concept demonstrates how modern stone design can be thoughtful, symbolic and refined — even within such a quiet and solemn form.
The surface of the tomb is bush-hammered, a traditional technique that creates a subtle yet expressive texture. This finish emphasises the monumentality of the form and allows the light to create delicate tonal variations throughout the day.
Hand-carved inscriptions and a simple cross are engraved onto the slab, adding a personal and emotional dimension while showcasing the high level of stone craftsmanship used in every project we undertake.
This tomb for the Gligora family is yet another example of how modern stone design can be harmoniously combined with the tradition of gravestone making, resulting in a piece that speaks equally of the permanence of the material and the respect for the person it honours.
Our workshop continues to explore new approaches to tomb design, always focusing on quality, symbolism and lasting value.
