Bell Tower and Outdoor Altar in Baška Voda

- the work on the church in Baška Voda is another prominent example of our stonemasonry workshop’s contribution to sacred architecture. This project, carried out according to the designs of architect Ante Rožić from Makarska, focused on the construction of a stone bell tower and an outdoor liturgical area – the altar and its surrounding elements. Sacred objects of this kind require great craftsmanship, sensitivity to symbolism, and deep respect for tradition and material. The bell tower, entirely built from white Brač stone, dominates the area with its vertical elegance, symbolising the spiritual ascent. The stone cladding runs the full height of the tower, and the precision-cut blocks ensure harmony and monumentality. Carefully proportioned stone windows allow natural light to enter the structure. The top of the tower is crowned with a richly profiled stone bifora – a double-arched window with a central column – giving the structure its final architectural identity. An outdoor altar was also created, enabling the celebration of Holy Mass outside the church. The entire liturgical space is stone-covered: the flooring, the base, and the altar itself. The stone floor features multiple levels to signify the sanctity of the space and support the liturgical movement. The altar, carved from white stone, features a relief on its front, while a large vertical stone element with an incised cross behind it symbolically connects heaven and earth. The liturgical area is further defined by four stone elements placed at the corners – symbolically enclosing the sacred space and completing the overall composition. The result exudes both simplicity and monumentality, blending tradition with a contemporary sculptural approach. Stone in sacred architecture has always played a unique role – as a natural, permanent, and solid material, it conveys spiritual endurance and purity. This project once again confirms that white Brač stone, shaped by skilled hands, becomes a powerful medium of spiritual expression.
