Stone Floor and Altar for the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Hvar
-the Jakšić Stonemasonry Workshop from the island of Brač proudly signs one of its most significant projects in the field of sacred architecture — the stone floor and altar in the Cathedral of St. Stephen I, pope and martyr, in Hvar. Sacral objects such as this historic cathedral require a special approach, deep respect for heritage, and a refined sense for space and material. The Cathedral of Hvar was built on the foundations of an early Christian church and took its current form over centuries, especially during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Its beauty lies in the harmony of historical styles and carefully crafted details, and we had the honour of contributing to this space through the stone floor and a new altar. The stone floor was made using a combination of white Brač stone and Rosso Verona. Brač stone is renowned for its light tone, consistency, and exceptional durability, while Rosso Verona, with its warm reddish hue, adds richness and contrast. In the sanctuary, the floor is designed with red-and-white stone tiles, arranged in alternating directions and guided by lines that define the liturgical zones. The entire floor design respects the original interior and the proportions of this notable structure. The altar was crafted according to a sketch by renowned Croatian sculptor Kuzma Kovačić, lending the project a strong artistic dimension. The stone was carved with great precision, following Kovačić’s sculptural style and integrating harmoniously into the sacred space.
