Cross on Mount Srđ above Dubrovnik
- the Jakšić stone workshop, under the direction of Dražen Jakšić, proudly donated the stone cross on Mount Srđ to the city of Dubrovnik — a lasting symbol of faith, unity, and endurance. The cross was rebuilt in 1997 as a faithful replica of the original monument, which had been destroyed during the Homeland War in 1991.
For our workshop, it was both a moment of pride and a gesture of deep respect toward a city renowned for preserving its cultural and spiritual heritage. The cross stands 14 metres tall and is entirely crafted from white Brač limestone, known for its purity and strength. It consists of five massive stone blocks – three forming the base, one large horizontal beam carved from a single block weighing eight tonnes, and one upper segment completing the monumental structure. The precision and skill required to execute such a construction were extraordinary, demanding both technical mastery and physical endurance. The assembly process was exceptionally challenging due to the enormous weight of the stone elements and the high-altitude location. Every block had to be carefully shaped, lifted, and positioned with absolute accuracy to ensure perfect balance and long-term stability. This project highlights the timeless power of stone in sacred monuments, where the material itself becomes a bearer of faith, memory, and identity. The reconstruction of the Srđ Cross marked a significant and emotional moment for Dubrovnik — the city regained one of its most recognisable symbols. For the Jakšić workshop, it was an honour to unite craftsmanship, devotion, and heritage preservation in a single work. Each surface of the stone was hand-finished, the joints precisely formed, giving the entire monument a unified, monolithic appearance. Today, the cross rises above Dubrovnik as a permanent symbol of peace and gratitude.
Its restoration represents the rebirth of the city’s spirit and the enduring message that stone, shaped by human hands, can preserve faith across generations.
The Jakšić stone workshop is proud to have gifted Dubrovnik this monumental cross of white Brač stone, a work that bridges history and eternity.
