Brešković “Suja” Family Tomb – Life in Stone

In our Jakšić stonemasonry workshop, a very specific family tomb is currently in the making for the Brešković family, known by the nickname “Suja.” This is a family with whom we have collaborated for many years and for whom we hold great respect, which gives this project special significance.

At this stage, we are presenting the concept, sketches, and several details of the execution, which are highly distinctive and deeply tied to the family’s heritage. The uniqueness of the tomb lies in its symbolism – the Brešković family has been engaged in quarrying stone from their own quarry for generations, and this life’s work became the central inspiration for the design.

Our principal designer, Dražen Jakšić, drew on the traditional method of stone splitting. The characteristic holes and grooves created by this old technique have been transformed into visual elements of the tomb. Both the headstone and the covering slab will incorporate these split-stone surfaces, with visible traces of the process, directly alluding to the family’s work and their life in stone.

A symbolic feature is also the name “Suja,” which will appear precisely across the fractured surfaces – on both the headstone and the tomb slab – like a reflection, as though it had always existed within the stone, waiting to be revealed.

With this project, we aim to show how the creation of a tomb can also be a conceptual work, linking family identity, tradition, and respect for the past with the permanence and dignity of white Brač stone.
