In Donji Humac on the island of Brač, extensive works have begun on the refurbishment of the square known as “Stagnica”, a place of special local significance. The name Stagnica originates from the speech of the local community and refers to an area that serves both as a bus stop and as the central gathering point of the village. We are particularly proud that the project is taking place here, in the immediate vicinity of our gallery and large workshop. Stagnica is a place where all members of the Jakšić family spent their childhood, each in different periods, carrying memories that give this square additional emotional value.
The public space design was developed by Dr. Art. Dina Jakšić Pavasović, while the works are carried out by our workshop in collaboration with other stonemasonry workshops from the village. Donji Humac has long been known for its exceptionally skilled and hardworking stone craftsmen, and these masters, each bringing their knowledge and experience, have united in a shared effort to create a dignified, functional, and aesthetically valuable public space.
The square is gaining numerous elements made from stone for public surfaces: a new stone pavement, sections of stone cladding, precisely crafted stone walls, a stone curb cover, and other functional details. A particularly interesting part of the project is the production of car stoppers, also known locally as bube, which are installed along the edges of the square to prevent parking. Their form rises and falls in a wave-like motion, as if the stone kerb has come to life, creating an effect not previously seen on Brač.
The project will also include the creation of additional stone elements such as a stone water fountain, a stone table, and the construction of a new bus station, making Stagnica an example of how the tradition of Brač stone can be transformed into a modern, functional, and identity-rich public space.
