At our Jakšić stonemasonry workshop on Brač, we are proud to present a new project – a headstone created and installed in Selca. This grave carries a strong symbolism shaped through the contrast of two stones: white Brač stone Sv. Petar and black granite Impala.
At first glance, the monument appears simple, yet within that simplicity lies a powerful message. The negative form is shaped to resemble a tree – a universal symbol of life. The family has been engaged in woodworking for generations, making the motif of the tree a natural choice and a strong connection with their heritage. The tree itself is made of black stone – a colour symbolising death – thus the entire composition tells a story of life and death carved into stone.
Our intervention in this project was the creation of the headstone (lapida). Although modest in scope, it holds great significance and carries a deep symbolic weight.
The Selca grave is yet another example of how white Brač stone, combined with carefully chosen materials and thoughtful design, can become a lasting monument worthy of remembrance.
