Our stonemasonry workshop has recently begun work on a highly interesting and technically demanding project – the conceptual design of a tomb for the well-known Gligora family. This project combines contemporary design, architectural precision and our long-standing experience in tomb construction and stone shaping for headstones and memorial monuments.
A key element in the early phase of this project is the creation of the scale model, crafted according to the plans of architect Ivan Šupraha. In our workshop, models hold exceptional importance, especially for complex and modern solutions such as this tomb. A model allows the client to understand the shape, volume and spatial composition of the future tomb in a clear, three-dimensional and tangible way. While technical drawings provide precision, the model offers a real spatial experience, enabling the client to visualise the project long before the tomb construction begins.
Models also serve as an essential communication tool between architect, stonemason and client. They allow expectations to be aligned, timely adjustments to be made and a clear vision of how each stone element will be executed. Over the years we have produced a large number of models, many of which decorate our workspace in Donji Humac – each one a testament to the value of this approach in both headstone fabrication and the development of large, technically demanding tombs.
The Gligora family tomb will feature a modern and minimalist design, defined by a simple geometric form visually punctuated by two precise cuts. This gives the tomb a sculptural quality and a distinct architectural character.
Another important aspect is the rougher stone finish, unusual for traditional tombs. This texture adds a sense of monumentality, strength and expressiveness, further emphasising the contemporary design approach.
Through the process of model making and the development of the concept, it becomes clear how essential careful planning is in every phase of tomb creation. This project once again confirms that high-quality preparation and clear visualisation – through the model – ensure flawless execution and a lasting, impressive result in stone.
