After more than two decades of work, one of the most demanding projects in the history of our workshop has finally been completed – the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Vincent de Paul in Split.
This monumental undertaking represents the pinnacle of years of stone craftsmanship and is the result of close collaboration between architect Slaven Rožić and our workshop under the guidance of Dražen Jakšić.
All stonework – from conceptual design to final execution – was entirely carried out by our workshop.
Almost every element was shaped from stone – the stone façade, stone floors, stone walls, thresholds, staircases, portals, and the dome, as well as numerous decorative details.
The entire exterior was made from white Brač stone, renowned for its purity, strength, and longevity. In the interior, various types of stone from around the world were used, achieving a perfect balance between tradition and modern expression.
At the heart of the structure lies the impressive dome, whose stone ribs were machine-cut, then hand-polished and installed with millimetre precision.
The stone façade features a dynamic texture – each plate is shaped with an edge that creates a subtle groove during installation, enhancing the horizontal line and lending the façade a sense of harmony and visual rhythm.
The edges between the stone walls were crafted as profiled transitions, carefully modelled to highlight depth and proportion. This thoughtful stonemasonry detail elevates the entire building to a higher level of architectural sophistication.
One of the most striking features is the windows shaped like the veiled heads of nuns, symbolising devotion and identity.
These stone elements serve a dual purpose – part of them functional, part purely decorative – designed to highlight the message and symbolism of the convent.
Richly profiled and finely carved, these details give the entire structure a distinctive artistic value, making the convent itself a true work of art in stone.
As with all our sacred buildings, this project embodies faith, tradition, and deep respect for the craft of stonework.
Now that the project is complete, we can proudly say that the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy stands as a lasting testament to mastery, precision, and the beauty of stone – our greatest achievement to date.
