In the parish of St Anne in Brgat, Dubrovnik County, a new statue of Our Lady and its surrounding square have been installed – a project that unites art, faith, and community.
The concept and realisation were created by academic sculptor Lovre Jakšić in collaboration with our stone workshop Jakšić.
The statue of the Virgin Mary, made in life-size, was carved from white Brač limestone, known for its fine texture and durability.
Before being shaped in stone, the statue went through the full sculptural process.
It began with modelling in clay, where the first volumes and facial expressions were formed. Afterwards, a plaster model was created to serve as a precise reference for the final work.
The next phase involved stone pointing, a traditional technique that transfers the form from the model to the stone with millimetre precision.
Finally, through hand carving, the delicate transitions and soft surfaces characteristic of the Virgin’s figure were refined and completed.
The stone arch rising above the statue and the stone cubes placed around the square symbolise unity among believers – a space for prayer, gathering, and reflection.
The square’s floor is made of finely polished stone, while the arch is bush-hammered, creating a contrast that enhances the gentle finish of the sculpture itself.
Our workshop completed all stone elements – the floor, stone benches, arch, and the statue of Our Lady.
This project is part of our ongoing work on sacred buildings, where stone becomes a medium for expressing spirituality and artistic creation.
The square in Brgat now stands as a place of gathering and devotion, with the statue of Our Lady serving as a symbol of peace, faith, and unity.
