Statue of the Virgin Mary in Brgat – Project by Academic Sculptor Lovre Jakšić

- in Brgat, Dubrovnik County, stands a remarkable statue of the Virgin Mary at the centre of a newly designed square dedicated to the Virgin – an outstanding example of sacred art made from white Brač stone.
The project was conceived and realised by academic sculptor Lovre Jakšić, a member of the renowned Jakšić familyand the owner of our stone workshop Jakšić, which has upheld the island’s stonemasonry tradition for generations. The stone statue of Our Lady in life-size is executed in a realistic style, conveying dignity, calmness, and spiritual presence. Lovre Jakšić has masterfully translated the gentleness and grace of the Virgin Mary into stone — her serene face, soft gaze, and naturally flowing drapery reflect profound artistic sensitivity and craftsmanship. The surface of the statue is finely polished, allowing light to enhance the sense of purity and softness. Surrounding the sculpture is a stone arch, executed in a bush-hammered finish, creating a subtle contrast to the smoothness of the statue. The square floor is made of finely polished stone, while stone cubes arranged in a semicircle symbolise the unity of believers gathered around the Virgin Mary. These cubes also serve a functional purpose — as stone benches for rest and prayer. Our workshop created every stone element – the floor, benches, arch, and statue. This project stands as an example of our expertise in the design and production of sacred buildings, where stone becomes a timeless medium for expressing spirituality and collective faith. Through the statue of the Virgin Mary in Brgat, Lovre Jakšić unites the artistic precision of traditional Brač stonemasonry with a modern understanding of sacred space. It is both a work of art and an expression of gratitude — a lasting symbol of peace, devotion, and the deep connection between faith and the stone heritage of Brač.
